SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Mary Monica Edler of South Sioux City, 80 years to the day of her birth, was reborn into eternal life on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, with her five children and members of her loving family at her side, after succumbing to post-operative complications following recent hip replacement surgery in Liberty, Mo.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dan Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 4 p.m. rosary by Catholic Daughters of America and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith, Larkin Northside Chapel.

Mary Monica (Harty) Edler entered into this earthly life on Feb. 2, 1927, in Sioux City, to parents, John "Jack" and Charlotte (Hartnett) Harty. A life-long resident of Dakota County, Mary spent her youth in Hubbard, Neb. and all of her adult life in South Sioux City, with more than 50 years in the same home. She attended Hubbard High School in Nebraska, graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School in Sioux City and attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City.

Mary and Ronald Earl Edler of Waterbury, Neb., were married on Nov. 19, 1947. She unselfishly devoted her entire life to loving and caring for her family. Mary was proud of her Irish heritage and traveled twice to Ireland with her children. Many years of researching her family heritage cumulated in the writing and publishing of a family history book about 10 years ago.

Before her retirement, Mary worked at Metz Baking Company and then at Adcraft Inc. for her son-in-law, Jim Kelly. Mary was one tough Irish lady and her spirit and fight were evident to the very end. Her strong faith, sense of humor, fortitude and perseverance carried her through many hard times. Mary's husband, Ronnie, passed away on Feb. 22, 1970, leaving their five children for her to raise on her own. She was always remembered on both Mother's Day and Father's Day because she earned and deserved both titles. Mary proudly stated "her greatest accomplishments were her five children." She not only raised her children but her love, caring and support continued from the first grandchild all the way through to the last. Spending time with her family was the center and focus of her life. Mary was loved and will be deeply missed not only by her family but also by a large circle of friends.

She was a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City and a member of Catholic Daughter's Society. Mary's interests included crafts, quilting, sewing, knitting, reading, crossword puzzles, plants, playing solitaire, piano, traveling and dancing. Her vast collection of angels brought her much joy.

Survivors include five children, Mike Edler of Liberty, Mo., Constance Edler-Bradford and her husband, Reed of Show Low, Ariz., Rosanne Chase of Wakefield, Neb., Donna McIntyre and her husband, Mike of South Sioux City and Ronnie Edler and his wife, Debra of Olathe, Kan.; 13 grandchildren, Dana Marquart, Steven Edler, Justin Kelly, Tyler Hanson, Michael McIntyre, Lacy Rose Chase, Lexi Edler and Ashlee Edler; six great-grandchildren, Shelby Edler, Idalis Kelly, Kelsea Hanson, Kristen Marquart, Dalton Kelly and Ty McIntyre; a brother, Jim Harty and wife, Lucille of Sioux City; sisters-in-law, Maxine "Mac" Owens and husband, Ralph of Sioux City, Jean "Baby" Perkins and husband, Boyce "Perk" of Waterbury, Neb., Jean Eichler and husband, Hal, Dixie Edler and Sue Edler, all of Yakima, Wash.; a brother-in-law, Robert "Bob" Nelson of Independence, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews, who loved their "Aunt Mary".

Monetary donations will be given for research of Familial Dilated Cardiomyopathy so others may live. It is with much sorrow and great love that we relinquish our friend, our Mother, and most of all, Our Hero, to Eternal Life with the Lord..

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Charlotte Harty; and her husband, Ronald Earl Edler.
