T. Sgt. John R. Matthews, about 44, an aircraft inspector at the 140th A.A.F. reserve base unit at the Sioux City airbase, was killed Tuesday night in a train accident at Lake City, S.C., the public information office at the base disclosed Wednesday.

Sgt. Matthews, who was attached to the engineering section at the base, left September 5 with his wife on a 45-day furlough to visit relatives at Lake City, his former home.

It was not learned whether his wife suffered any injuries, or how the accident occurred.

Sgt. And Mrs. Matthews had resided at Sergeant Bluff nearly a year. He was an aircraft inspector with the unit for 10 months and had only three years to serve with the army before becoming eligible for retirement after 20 years served.

He served overseas during World War II for five months.
