Death Angel Calls Miss Dorothy Burns

Impressive Funeral Services Were Held and Interment Made in Holly Springs Cemetery

Our community was saddened on last Sunday to learn of the death of Miss Dorothy Burns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Burns, who passed away at the home of her parents Sunday morning, September 8.

Miss Dorothy had been ill since her graduation from the Holly Springs High School in May of 1926, gradually growing weaker, despite her courageous fight to regain her health. During her illness she was never heard to complain and greatly enjoyed the visits of her many friends and continually kept up her interest in her church, the Methodist Church of Holly Springs. Although the death angel has summoned this dear and saintly daughter, sister and friend at an early period in life, it is indeed a great satisfaction and comfort to the bereaved family and also her many friends to know that God has called upon her for further work in that place where there is no pain and suffering or sorrow.

Reverend O.P. Mueller, former Hornick and Holly Springs pastor and Reverend Carl Hammer present pastor conducted the beautiful and impressive services at the Holly Springs Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in that pretty and restful cemetery beside the resting place of her mother who passed away when Dorothy was five years of age.

Pallbearers were chosen from among her friends and school mates and were: Victor Jones, Palmer Arnold, Paul Christensen, Clifford McClaran, Wayne Hanner, Bruce Haddock. The choir composed of Mrs. J.L. Peters, Mrs. Morris Metcalf, Everett Persinger and Lester Harrison with Miss Almyra Peters accompanying, rendered very beautiful and comforting selections. The obituary of this sweet girl follows:

Dorothy May Burns was born February 8th 1907 on the farm where she has lived all her life.

She was the only daughter of Louise and Ralph Burns.

When Dorothy was five years old her mother died. At the time her aunt, Mrs. Rose Bleum, cared for the mother during her illness and stayed on and cared for the family that was left and later became the second wife of Ralph Burns.

Miss Dorothy united with the Methodist Church of Holly Springs in 1920 and she was most faithful in her attendance at the services and was secretary of the Sunday School for several years, or up until the time of her illness.

Dorothy graduated from Holly Springs High School in May 1925. This was both a happy event and also an occasion for great concern, for the next day she took to her bed to try to regain her health. For a time it looked as though she might come out victorious. She seemed to gain rapidly and was able to be about the second summer.

A relapse followed an attack of bronchitis and she was taken to a Sioux City hospital for a tonsil operation in July 1927 in hopes that this might help.

During her four years of illness she has been very patient and very cheerful, always grateful to her many friends for the kind things they have done for her, and she in turn found a great pleasure in doing beautiful fancy work for her friends and for the church.

Dorothy’s faith in her Jesus helped her to live in a peaceful frame of mind and on the morning of September 8th, she passed away at the age of 22 years and 7 months.

She leaves to mourn her loss a host of friends and relatives.

The immediate relatives besides the parents are the sister, Mrs. Freda Taft, Sioux City, Mrs. Ida Bartleson, Atlantic, Iowa, the brothers, Ed Arveson and Ralph Jr. at home.

The relatives from out of town in attendance at the services were: Mrs. A.J. Stevens of Sac City, Iowa, Mrs. A.J. Holboth of Storm Lake, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stevens and Mr. and Mrs. C. Lenz and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bettin all of Everly, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Yockey of Smithland, Iowa.

Peters and Becker Funeral directors were in charge of funeral arrangements.
