(Oto Observer): Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 1944, in the Bethel-Peiro Church for J.R. Carter, who passed away at his home in Grant Township, Thursday morning with Rev. Kenneth Pederson of Climbing Hill officiating. Interment was in the Bethel Cemetery under direction of Hudgel Funeral Service of Anthon.

John Raymond Carter, son of the late James and Belle Carter, was born January 30, 1887, near Lamar, Nebraska, and passed away November 30, 1944, at the age of 57 years and 10 months. At the age of 11 he moved with his parents to a farm west of Anthon. He received his education in the rural school, Anthon High School and the National Business Training School at Sioux City.

On February 3, 1909, he was married to Laura Frances Baker, and to this union four children, three sons and one daughter, were born. At that time he moved to a farm three and one-half miles northwest of Oto, where he resided until his death. In early manhood Mr. Carter united with the Methodist church hand remained an active member in both church and Sunday school. A man held in great respect in the community, he served as trustee of Grant Twp. about 18 years and was a director of the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company for a number of years. He was a kind husband and loving father, an obliging neighbor and an honest, upright citizen.

Surviving are his widow, Laura; three sons, Keith R. of Denver, Colorado; Wayne B. with the U.S. Armed Forces in New Guinea; and Donald Francis at home; a daughter, Mrs. Bernice McGowan of Denver; two sisters, Mrs. Olive Dixon of Anthon and Mrs. Katharyne Ninemire of Sioux City; a brother Clarence of Elgin, Nebraska, and three grandchildren, Larry McGowan, Bobby Carter and Connie Lou Carter.
