SIOUX CITY | Dr. Philip Justin Monnig, formerly of Longboat Key, Fla., and Sioux City, passed away on March 8, 2016 at Brookestone Village in Omaha.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Augustin Catholic Church, 545 42nd St., in Des Moines. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at St. Augustin Parish Center. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines.

Philip was born on Aug. 27, 1922, in Anita, Iowa, to Justin and Mary (Green) Monnig. He grew up in Anita and Ottumwa, Iowa, where he won several spelling bee championships. He received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. He completed his internship at St. Mary's Hospital, Detroit, Mich., his general surgery residency at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, and his thoracic surgery residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Academic honors include membership in Alpha Kappa Kappa, Medical Fraternity, and Alpha Omega Alpha, Honorary Medical Society.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 as an ensign and apprentice seaman in the USNR. From 1947 to 1949 he served as a lieutenant JD-USNR medical officer at USNH Brooklyn, N.Y., USS Guadalupe (Pacific and Middle East), and USNH in the Great Lakes, Ill.

He married Ginny in 1945 and they shared 62 wonderful years before she died in 2007. He was a general and thoracic surgeon in private practice in Sioux City from 1955 to 1987. He served as chief of surgery and president of medical staff at St. Joseph Hospital, president of Siouxland Surgical Associates, and director of Medical Affairs for Marian Health Center. He was a past president of the Woodbury County Medical Society, the Iowa Academy of Surgery, and the Iowa Clinical Surgical Society. He was affiliated with numerous professional and civic organizations; he authored several surgical publications.

Philip retired in 1987 to Longboat Key, Fla., where he and Ginny enjoyed their heaven on earth, including friends, golf, church, reading, pottery and painting.

Philip is survived by his seven children, Anne Monnig of Sioux City, Christine (Mark) Woodruff of Omaha, James (Marian) Monnig of Leawood, Kan., Dennis (Cara) Monnig of Springfield, Mo., Erin (Mark) Rice of West Des Moines, Martha Monnig of Omaha, and Susan (Joseph) Vicari of Rockford, Ill.; sister, Mary Modesta Nagle of Bettendorf, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia (Kirke) Monnig; and his brother, John "Jack" Monnig.

Philip's family is deeply grateful to the devoted care he received at Brookestone Village.
