SIOUX CITY | Patricia Ash Hopkins, 70, of New Braunfels, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, March 18, 2016, at home, after fighting cancer for several years.

Pat was born May 14, 1945, in Thief River Falls, Minn., the daughter of Norm and Gerry Ash. She graduated from Wayne (Neb.) State College with a degree in physical education. She earned a master's degree in special education from the University of Northern Iowa.

She taught in Hastings, Neb., Cedar Falls, Newton and Southeast Polk, Iowa, and Sioux City Public Schools during her 32-year career.

She moved to Texas after retirement to be near her daughters and grandchildren. Pat enjoyed supporting her grandchildren in their activities.

Survivors include her daughters, Andrea DeGroote and Heidi (Rob) Hopkins; grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan, Peyton and Sydney; sister, Kathy Ash Bassett; brother-in-law, Dave Vondra; and nieces, great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Nancy Ash Vondra.

Continuing to educate after death, Pat requested her body be donated to the University of Texas.
