30 December 2007Dr. Albert Deedrick Blenderman Jr., 88, of Venus, Fla., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, in Houston, Texas.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Christy-Smith Morningside Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.
Albert Deedrick Blenderman Jr. was born Nov. 20, 1919, to Ruth Adelia (Hawk) and Albert Deedrick Blenderman Sr., in Sioux City. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1937. He attended the University of South Dakota, where he received a bachelor of science degree in medicine in 1942. His medical training was completed at the University of Vermont, where he received a medical degree in 1943. He interned at Beverly Hospital in Massachusetts, and then entered the U.S. Air Force and served as a flight surgeon in World War II.
He was joined in marriage with Margaret Morse on Dec. 27, 1943. Following the war, he returned to Iowa and practiced medicine in Paullina, Iowa, for eight years. He then completed a residency in orthopedic surgery in Kansas City, Mo., and returned to Sioux City, where he practiced orthopedic surgery from 1959 to 1983. Following his retirement, he resided in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Venice, Fla.
On March 2, 1998, he married Virginia Collins.
He was certified as an orthopedic surgeon by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and belonged to the Clinical Orthopedic Society, Mid Central States Orthopedic Society, American Medical Society and the Iowa Orthopedic Society. He was an avid golfer and sailor as well as artist and an accomplished wood carver.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Blenderman; children, Donald Blenderman and wife, Debra, Susan Nelson and husband, John, and Phyllis Boysen and husband, Phillip; stepsons, Rick Collins and Terry Collins; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his parents; and his grandparents.
Memorials may be made to the Sioux City Art Center.
