6 March 2003Edward W. Zink, 91, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nativity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today, with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m., and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Edward W. Zink was born in Sioux City on Oct. 28, 1911, the son of Edward and Veronica (Zechmann) Zink. He attended St. Boniface Grade School, high school at Trinity Seminary and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in North Platte, Neb. in 1929. He attended Midwest Business College for two years. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Panama from 1941 to 1945, achieving the rank of staff sergeant.
He married Luella Ferne Lindgren on April 20, 1940 at St. Patrick's Church in North Platte. Ed worked for the Railway Express Agency, owned and operated grocery stores in Dixon, Neb. and Centerville, S.D., where he was also a member of the Centerville Chamber of Commerce. When he returned to Sioux City in 1956, he worked at the Martin Hotel and was a meat cutter at Weldings, Swartz and Chet's Markets. When he semi-retired in 1982, he started a window washing service.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, the Nativity Parish, where he was an user for many years, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen and her husband, Norman Mahoney of Sioux City; a son, Tom and his wife, Pam Zink of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a brother, John and his wife, Marge Zink of Whiting, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Frances Lindgren of Flint, Mich.; five grandchildren, Norman Mahoney of Climbing Hill, Iowa, Lou Anne Mahoney and Heidi Mahoney, both of Sioux City, Michael Zink of Iowa City, Iowa, and Cpl. Tyson Zink, currently stationed in Kuwait with the U.S. Marines; 13 nieces and nephews; and many other relatives in the Louisville, Ky. area.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Luella; a brother, Frank; and an infant granddaughter Zink.
Pallbearers will be Norman Mahoney, Michael Zink, John Zink, Robert Zink, Gene Martin and Mike Post.
Honorary pallbearer will be Cpl. Tyson Zink.
Memorials may be directed to the Heifer Project or to St. Joseph's Children's Home in Louisville, Ky.
