31 December 2000Vitus Valentine Wiederholt, 87, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Jeffrey A. Schleisman, associate pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present, and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., all at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mr. Wiederholt was born Dec. 5, 1913, in Alton, Iowa, the son of Ben and Kate (Pick) Wiederholt. He was raised in the Remsen area and had lived in Sioux City for 54 years. He married Helen Staab Roder on April 19, 1948, in Sioux City.
He was employed by the Missouri Valley Machinery Company, Caterpillar Dealer, as the product support manager for 32 years. He retired in 1978.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Remsen. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a TSGT. He was a radar technician for the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Joseph and Peggy of Madison, Wis., Barry and Jo of Denver, and Dennis and Patty of Omaha; two daughters and their husbands, Sharon and William Glowacki of Davenport, Iowa, and Barbara and David Reynolds of Chapel Hill, N.C.; three brothers, Urban and his wife, Rita Wiederholt of Le Mars, Iowa, Marvin Wiederholt of Cherokee, Iowa, and Bernard and Elaine Wiederholt of Le Mars; a sister and her husband, Verina and Frank Beckmann of Remsen; a sister-in-law, Blanche Wiederholt of Remsen; 11 grandchildren, Robert, Paul and Christine Glowacki, Lisa Koehler, Jade, Mekel, Kyle, and Cory Wiederholt, Megan, Samuel, and Brian Reynolds; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Amanda Wiederholt; and three brothers, Ermin, Luverne and Leonard.
Pallbearers will be Bob and Paul Glowacki, Mekel and Kyle Wiederholt, Megan Reynolds, and Christopher Koehler.
Memorials in his name may be directed to Trinity Heights, Blessed Sacrament, and/or Heelan High School.
