Edmund W. DeMers, 84, of Bremerton, Wash., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Bremerton, after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. DeMers was born Oct. 2, 1915, at Jefferson, S.D., the son of Alexander J. and Pamela (DeGrandmont) DeMers. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City.

He married Gladys Margaret Etbauer of Hand County, S.D., on Sept. 19, 1945, in Sioux City. She preceded him in death on Feb. 29, 1996.

He owned and operated DeMers Service at the corner of Ross Street and Military Road for 45 years, before retiring in 1975 to a farm in North Sioux City (located where the Dakota Dunes community now exists). He returned to Sioux City in 1988, and lived at Sacred Heart Retirement Community until moving to Bremerton in 1997.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was stationed aboard the USS Astoria in the Pacific.

He was a long time member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and was active in numerous church activities. He enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include a brother, Gerald "Gene", of Bremerton; two sisters: Blanche Bonar of Cameron Park, Calif., and Darlene Ament of Marion, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie; two brothers: Alexander and Aurel; and seven sisters: Yvonne Heenan, Aldea, Pamela Kale, Rita Burdick, Lauria Gardiner, Berdina, and Elaine Wacikowski.
