James R. Gates, 83, a retired salesman and World War II veteran, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, of natural causes at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Mr. Gates was born in Quimby, Iowa, and lived in Sioux City for 65 years before moving to Iowa City in 2007. He graduated from Quimby High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and served for four years, stationed in Hawaii and Guam. He served in the battle of Iwo Jima.

He was married to Frances Gates for 62 years. Frances passed away in 2006. The couple had 12 children, 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was an avid golfer and had eight holes-in-one and claimed a ninth with no witnesses.

Survivors include Cheryl A. Gates (wife of eldest son, Jim Gates who passed away on July 17, 2003); sons, Patrick (Cheryl) Gates of Hibbing, Minn., Paul Gates of Bloomington, Ind., Robert (Angie) Gates of Phoenix, Ariz., Thomas Gates of Sioux City, Gerald (Sandy) Gates of Phoenix, Joseph Gates of Sioux City, Daniel (LeeAnn) Gates of Sioux City and John Gates of Iowa City, Iowa; and daughters, Michaelene (Mel) Trudeau of Aurora, Ill., Mary (Sheldon) Schur of Riverwoods, Ill., and Judy (Brian) Mills of Iowa City.
