MERRILL, Iowa | Harry B. White, 94, of Sioux City, formerly of Merrill, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at Holy Spirit Retirement Center in Sioux City.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God Church, 4420 Cheyenne Blvd. in Sioux City, with the Rev. John Millem officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Monday, with the family present at 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City.

Harry B. was born in Parkerton, Wyo., on Sept. 25, 1920, the son of Harry H. and Mamie P. (Cale) White. He lived in Sioux City most of his life. As a young person he sold pies from his family’s bakery to the WPA and delivered messages to Western Union. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Nov. 20, 1942, to Jan. 11, 1946.

Harry married Betty Jo McIntyre in North Carolina on May 20, 1944, while on leave from the Army. He earned his bachelor’s degree, attending college in Texas, Arkansas and Missouri. He began working in the Woodbury County Social Service office at Sioux City in 1952 and continued working for social services for 32 years, retiring in October, 1982.

Harry was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Sioux City, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, board member and a CA leader in 1942. He also enjoyed old cars and farming.

Survivors include two daughters, Gaylene Bobier-Nicolls and husband, Duane Nicolls of Sioux City, and Becky White of Minneapolis, Minn.; granddaughter, Tiffany (Bill) Harvat of Omaha; six step-grandchildren; one great-grandson, Jude Harvat; a brother, Marvin (Betty) White of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Bonnie Hatcher of Mesa, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Mary White of Seattle; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mamie White; an infant son, David Lee White; and a brother, Roy White.
