SIOUX CITY | Parker Knudsen, 82, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, at a local hospital.

Abiding by his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army.

Parker was born on Feb. 4, 1932, in Anthon, Iowa, to Peter and Bessy Faye (Parker) Knudsen. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, with 40th Infantry Division, 223 Regiment, I Company. Parker had 26 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, receiving the rank of Sgt. First Class.

He was united in marriage to Janine Kobold on Feb. 10, 1953. To this union they had three children. He was then united in marriage to Patty Nelson from May 9, 1998, until his passing. He was employed for the city of Sioux City Water Department for 40 years.

Parker enjoyed family gatherings, playing horseshoes, Monopoly, and boating in Okoboji with Patty’s children and grandchildren, Lucas, Bailee, and Erik. Parker was a lifetime member of the Sioux City V.F.W., South Sioux City Eagles, and South Sioux City American Legion Post 304, and a member of Trimble United Methodist Church.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Patty Knudsen of Sioux City; daughter, Kathy (Kelly) Knerl of Ponca, Neb.; son, Kerry (Jeannie) Knudsen of St. Augustine, Fla.; stepson, Carl (Jenna) Nelson of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Lucas, Bailee, Erik and Adam; a great-grandchild; brothers, Raymond (Jean) Knudsen, and Eddie (Sue) Knudsen; brothers-in-law, Roger (Peggy) Nelson of Sioux City, and Al (Joan) Nelson of West Des Moines; and best friend, Kim Steele.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mayme Foster and Joyce Phillyss; and brothers, Wayne, John and Pete Knudsen.

Parker will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved to laugh and have fun.
