SLOAN, Iowa -- Hazel Goodwin, 88, of Sloan died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Community of Christ Church in Sloan, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Sloan Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Hazel was born Aug. 25, 1915, in rural Hornick, Iowa, the daughter of William Daniel and Naomi Vesta (Cheely) Coons. She was raised in the area and graduated from Sloan High School in 1933.

She married Donald "Bud" Olson on May 20, 1936, in Luverne, Minn. The couple owned and operated Bud's Cafe in Sloan. Bud was killed in the Philippines on Dec. 5, 1944, during World War II. Hazel married Archie Goodwin on Feb. 27, 1947, in Fremont, Neb. Archie died on Feb. 19, 1996, in Sioux City.

Hazel was a nurses' aide at Sloan Nursing Home and Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa. She had been a resident of Sunrise Nursing Home in Sioux City since August 2003.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Sloan and Smith-Rhodes American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Drea and Joe Hill of Westminister, Colo., Donald Stanley and Sue Olson of Wilmington, Del., and Ronald Edward and Patricia Goodwin of Spencer, Iowa; eight grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-step-granddaughter; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by a stepson, Dick Goodwin; an infant granddaughter, Stacy Goodwin; a brother, Everett Coons; and two sisters, Zilda Jipsen and Bunnie Dunigan.
