17 December 2003Hester Conway Idzal, 92, formerly of Sioux City, the wise family matriarch whose life of faith touched so many lives, went to join her father in heaven on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003.
A celebration of her life will be held for the family in Phoenix, Ariz., where she spent the last four years of her life.
She was an Iowan through and through, born Oct. 10, 1911, in Creston, Iowa. She graduated as a registered nurse from Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She married Milton M. Idzal and raised three children in Sioux City. She was a lifelong fan of all Iowa college sports teams.
Hester will be remembered by many as the enthusiastic executive director of the Cancer Society, in the days when people went door to door for donations. Others may remember her as the person with the ideas and the enthusiasm to carry them out when the Sioux City Senior Center was in its infancy. Her P.E.O. sisters will also remember her for the special person she was. Most who knew her will never forget the faith she exemplified through 30 years of devotion and care of her husband, who suffered with Parkinson's disease. She was the epitome of faith, hope and charity all rolled into one person.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Ruth; sons, Dan and Tim; their respective spouses; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz. 85014
