Celeste (Masuen) Smith, 85, of Sioux City died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at a Sioux City retirement community.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin M. Richter officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherines Cemetery in Oyens, Iowa, with the Rev. Randy L. Schon officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith was born April 9, 1914, on a farm at Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Clem and Katherine (Swain) Masuen. Katherine Swain Masuen died in 1916. Clem Masuen later married Josephine Fettes.
She was reared in the Le Mars, Oyens and Alton area, and Pipestone, Minn., where she attended high school.

She married Roy G. Smith on Oct. 9, 1940, in Sioux City. The couple moved to Rockford, Ill., for 12 years, and then returned to Sioux City. He died on Oct. 26, 1963, in Sioux City. She was employed in the produce production department at Swift & Co. for 20 years. She retired in 1974.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and of the church guild. She was also a member of the Ave Maria Court 269 Catholic Daughters of America, the Christian Mothers Rosary Society, a former member of the Eagles Club, and a member of Siouxland Senior Center.

Survivors include two sons and their wives: Dale and Anne and John and RoxAnn, all of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands: Evelyn and Neal Nordby of Papillion, Neb., Karen and Wayne Rieckmann of Kingsley, Iowa, and Mary P. and Richard Smith of San Ramon, Calif.; 12 grandchildren: Jenny Seals, Jayne Dodson, Susan Feyen, Brian, Brad, Dawn P., Karen K. and Tara Smith, Angela Montagne, Karla and Derek
Rieckmann, and Matthew Bingham; two great grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Vincent and Mary Masuen of Oyens, Iowa; a sister, Catherine Evans of Le Mars, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Joe Heuertz of Remsen, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Evans and Marie Heuertz; a granddaughter, Holly K. Smith; two brothers-in-law, Myron Evans and Arnold Evans; and a half-brother and a half-sister in infancy.

Pallbearers will be Brian and Brad Smith, Derek Rieckmann, Matt Bingham and William and Norbert Evans.

A memorial has been established for the Queen of Peace.
