HORNICK, Iowa | Dean V. Unkel, 95, of Hornick passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hornick United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catie Newman officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service at Onawa, Iowa. Dean Virgil Unkel was born Feb. 26, 1918, in rural Hornick, Iowa, the son of John and Edna (Steinhoff) Unkel.

Dean and Phyllis Ferdig were united in marriage on March 22, 1939, and were blessed with two children, Terry and Susan. They were lifetime farmers in rural Hornick. Phyllis passed away Dec. 16, 2011, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Dean was a member of the Hornick United Methodist Church and a faithful member of the church choir. Dean also sang with the Hornick Men’s Quartet. Dean served on the Holly Springs School Board for a number of years and enjoyed being scorekeeper at basketball games. Dean always enjoyed fishing, and he dearly loved all of his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Terry and Laureen of Belleville, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Susan and Wallace Mundy of Sugar Grove, Ill.; two grandchildren, Michael (Ramie) Mundy of Aurora, Ill., and Megan (Bryan) Marconi of Joliet, Ill.; great-grandson, Henry Mundy of Aurora; great-granddaughter, Emerson Mundy of Aurora; sister, Phyllis Evans of San Diego, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edna; his wife, Phyllis; sister, Irma Fuehrer; and an infant brother, Paul.

Memorials in Dean’s memory may be directed to the Hornick Methodist Church.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful care that both Dean and Phyllis received while they made their home at Pleasant View Care Center.
