SIOUX CITY -- Vernon Lewis "Shorty" Bauerly, 93, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Vernon was born Aug. 21, 1916, on a farm in Merrill, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Leulla (Barnett) Bauerly.

He married Fern Harrison on Feb. 23, 1938, in Merrill. She preceded him in death in 1970. Later, he met and married Marguerite Dilly and she preceded him in death. In 1981, he married Dorothy Wagner in Michigan. They enjoyed their many driving trips to Arizona for winters. She preceded him in death in 1989. Vernon worked at Swift Packing House on the cut line for 39 years before his retirement.

He enjoyed playing cards games, especially Euchre and Poker, but his greatest love was the Chicago Cubs baseball team. He also enjoyed the family reunions on Thanksgiving and the June picnics at Riverside Park.

Survivors include his daughter, Judy and her husband, Jim Moore of Sioux City; sons, Bill Bauerly and his wife, Diane of Sergeant Bluff and Richard "Dick" Bauerly and his wife, Janet of Kingsley, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Don Bauerly and his wife, Betty of Sergeant Bluff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Fern, Marguerite and Dorothy; and three brothers, Menard, Francis and Bob.
