SLOAN, Iowa | Evelyn M. Pope, 100, formerly of Sloan, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, in Fresno, Calif.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sloan Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Moore officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Root Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rootfuneralhomes.com.

Evelyn M. Pope, the daughter of Owen and Stella (Oliver) Pope, was born on April 10, 1913, in Sloan. Evelyn graduated from Sloan High School in 1931 and from Morningside College in Sioux City in 1935. She attended summer music schools at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., Educational Music Bureau in Chicago, Ill., and the F. Melius Christiansen Choral Music School in Ephraim, Wis., all while teaching public school music for five years in two Iowa towns of Traer and Nevada.

Evelyn moved to California in 1940 and did piano accompanying work in Hollywood for vocal, instrumental and dance studios. From 1945 to 1950, she worked for the Hollywood Citizen Newspaper before moving to Seattle, Wash., where she worked for the U.S. Federal Government (War Assets Administration) until 1955. She then moved back to Long Beach, Calif., where she worked for the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital as a payroll clerk until 1960. For the next 23 years, she owned and operated a health food store in Huntington Park, Calif., until her retirement in 1983.

Evelyn is survived by her niece, Pat Behnsch of Fresno; and nephews, Robert Pope and his wife, Marilyn of Greensboro, N.C., and Richard Pope of Sloan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Arthur Pope and Howard Pope and his wife, Lois.
