SIOUX CITY | Ruth Mildred (McAndrews) Corey, 79, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, with the Rev. Lucas Rice officiating. Burial will be in St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery at Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., all at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, 11th and Jones, in Sioux City. Ruth was born on Oct. 2, 1933, in Santa Monica, Calif., the daughter of Earl and Ruth (Inke) McAndrews. Ruth grew up in California and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy. She was a Franciscan nun teaching in California for 23 years.

Ruth married Robert E. Corey in August 1974, at St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City.

Ruth enjoyed going to coffee with her friends, but was happiest when teaching her beloved students. She taught in California for many years and two years in Japan. After the death of her husband, she moved to Sioux City and taught at Briar Cliff University, the Flexible Learning Center and ended a 60-year career at the Boys and Girls Home. She touched the lives of hundreds of students who were better off having known Ruth.

Survivors include two great friends, Sherry Flansburg and Bill Raasch of Sioux City; two brothers and their families, Robert and Susan McAndrews of California, and Patrick and Donna McAndrews of Illinois; a brother-in-law, Nick and Carol Corey and family of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law in Sioux City and their families, Esther McDaniels and Suzanne and George Stickney; a goddaughter, Rebecca Suhr; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Corey; and her parents, Earl and Ruth McAndrews.

Pallbearers will be Brian Corey, George Stickney Jr, David Suhr, Tucker Sitzmann, Morgan Corey, and Nicole Cummings. Honorary pallbearer will be Lori O’Donnell.
