MOVILLE, Iowa, -- James George Wendel, 72, of Stanwood, Iowa, formerly of Moville and Union County, S.D., died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stanwood Union Church, with Pastor Phil Leipold officiating. Burial will be in Woodward (Iowa) Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, Iowa.

James George Wendel was born Sept. 20, 1937, on a farm in Union County S.D., the son of Emil and Ida (Lindner) Wendel. Jim grew up outside of Moville.

While attending Yankton College in Yankton, S.D., he met Marilyn Van Epps. They married June 9, 1963, in Yankton.

Jim was a longtime teacher and coach at Lincoln Community and North Cedar Schools. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; his daughters, Sheryl (Doug) Kardell of Grimes, Iowa, and Sheila (Michael) Woollard of Granger, Iowa; a son, Jeff (Michelle) Wendel of Ankeny, Iowa; four grandchildren, Kylie and Dalton Kardell and Katelyn and Emma Wendel; three sisters, Katherine Henshaw of Sioux City, Dolores Benedix of Moville and Jo-Ann (Joe Ray) Leach of Bossier City, La.; and a brother, Ray (Carol) Wendel of Granger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Emil; and a nephew, Todd Wendel.
