SIOUX CITY -- Magdalene Lucas, 85, of Sioux City died at her home, with family and friends at her side, on Nov. 17, 2009 of pancreatic cancer.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at North Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. A private family graveside service was held Nov. 19 in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Magdalene was born on Sept. 20, 1924, in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of George and Marie Thiessen. She was raised near Gaza, Iowa, and graduated from the Gaza school system. After graduation she moved to California and worked as a waitress at the Coronado Inn Restaurant on Coronado Island.

She returned to Iowa and married Robert Lucas, from Alton, in December 1948. After marriage she and her husband moved to Sioux City, remaining here ever since. She was a loving and devoted mother to the three children born to this union. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, she was an avid student of the Bible. She worked tirelessly to teach her

children and others about what we are praying for when we say the Lord's Prayer and how the outworking of that prayer will affect all mankind on earth.

For many years she held the position of bookkeeper in her husband's home building business. She loved to visit family and friends, read, go boating, and follow sports, but most of all, she loved discussing the Bible.

She is survived by two sons, Bruce and his wife, Ardith of Sioux City and Timothy and his wife, Ginger of Carbondale, Colo.; a daughter, Shelley and Daniel Lulow of Omaha; a grandson, Nickolas and his wife, Amy of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Zoe; and a great-grandson, Riley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; brothers, Carl, Paul and Daniel; a nephew, Michael; and a niece, Lori Beth.
