SIOUX CITY -- Sharon L. Sims, 61, of Sioux City died with her children and family members at her side Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy battle with COPD.

A family gathering will be held at a later date per her wishes. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Sharon was born Aug. 19, 1948, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the daughter of Curtis George VanRoekel of Sioux Falls and Ruth Mildred (Erickson) VanRoekel of Winner, S.D. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1966. Sharon moved to Long Beach, Calif., to continue her education.

She met and married Thomas Franklin Sims Jr. in Long Beach, in 1967. She was blessed with two children. She worked many jobs in her life. Her favorite position was caring for the many loving children at Mary Elizabeth Day Care.

Survivors include her children, Tammie R. Dye of Desert Center, Calif., and Thomas F. Sims III of Tea, S.D.; six grandchildren, Brittany (U.S. Navy), Alexandra and Samantha Dye, Blake, Codey and Aidan Sims; her mother, Ruth M. VanRoekel of Winner, S.D.; two sisters, Barbara VanRoekel of Sioux City and JoAnn Hiatt of Olathe, Kan.; and many special nieces and nephews, including, Jennifer VanRoekel, who cared for Sharon as her health faded.

She was preceded in death by her father, Curtis VanRoekel; and a favorite uncle, John P. Erickson.
