SIOUX CITY -- Vera Marie Pomerico, 100, of Sioux City died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Jefferson, S.D. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Vera was born July 16, 1909, in Sioux City, the daughter of Thomas and Lillian (Benton) Ghizoni. She lived in the Sioux City and Jefferson, S.D., area all of her life.

She married Melvin "Alex" Johnson on July 20, 1926. They later divorced. She married Anthony B. Pomerico on Oct. 8, 1938. He died on Dec. 16, 2002. She worked as a housekeeper for several families in the Sioux City area.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved music and played the piano by ear. As a child, she played for the silent movies in Elk Point, S.D. She loved cards and belonged to card clubs. She also enjoyed playing bingo. She was very handy with her hands and would take on any project at home. She also was a wonderful seamstress.

She is survived by her children, Floyd and Ann Lennon of Akron, Iowa, Melvin Johnson of Issaguah, Wash., Betty Jean Larkin of Langhorne, Pa., and Nick and Patricia Pomerico of Huron, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a former daughter-in-law, Barbara Johnson of Port Orchard, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son, Richard Johnson.

Pallbearers will be Mark Pomerico, Bruce Lennon, Bernard Pomerico, Craig Burris and Don Streeter.

A memorial has been established in her name for Hospice of Siouxland.
