DANBURY, Iowa -- Carl Simmons, 79, of rural Danbury passed away Friday, June 20, 2008, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, with the Rev. Terry Roeder officiating. Burial will be in Quimby Cemetery at Quimby, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the V.F.W., L.A. Wescott Post 2253. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a 7 p.m. vigil wake service, at the church. Visitation will resume 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Carl was born on Dec. 21, 1928, at Anthon, Iowa, to Chris and Edna (Ladwig) Simmons. He grew up in the Anthon area and the family moved to Quimby, Iowa, in 1939, where he lived until 1952. He served six years in the Iowa National Guard, being honorably discharged as a corporal.

He was married to Leona Murray on Feb. 2, 1953, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. Carl farmed southeast of Danbury from 1952 until his retirement in 1999. He took great pride in keeping his lawn mowed, raising his garden and feeding his cats.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. Carl enjoyed playing euchre, fishing, hunting and liked dancing to the old music.

Survivors include his wife, Leona; his five children, Carlene Hamann and her husband, Lynn of Danbury, Scott Simmons and his wife, Shari of Danbury, Barbara Moser and her husband, Douglas of Danbury, Kevin Simmons and his wife, Linda of Mapleton, Iowa, and Wesley Simmons of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Opal Wheeler and her husband, Donald of Nuevo, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Michael Moser.
