Charles A. "Chuck" Green, 78, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday, May 27, 2002, at his residence of a heart attack.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Nativity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Chalice service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Chuck was born Nov. 3, 1923, Anthon, Iowa, to Bartholomew and Anna (Hawn) Green. His family farmed until a premature death left Chuck and his five siblings orphaned in 1936. He graduated from Anthon¬High School and worked several jobs until joining the U.S. Army. He served in World War II from 1943 to 1945, stationed in Africa, Italy an Germany. Following the war, he graduated from Sioux City Barber College.

He met and married Sophie Rutowicz on Nov. 30, 1946, started a family and was adopted by his in-laws and the Polish community of St. Francis Church.

Chuck began an over 40-year career by styling hair at the Pearl St. Barber Shop until he purchased the business from Vic Peterson and it became Chuck Green's Barber Shop, a fixture at 6th and Pearl in downtown Sioux City. He retired in 1986, passing the shears and razor strop to Denny Wilde.

Being orphaned at the age of 13, and separated from four brothers and a sister for over 40-years, prompted Chuck to be a consummate family man, who demanded his children achieve the college education he was not afforded. As a self-made entrepreneur, he enjoyed bowling, gardening, "playing cards with the boys," making polish sausage, visiting his children on the west coast and "driving Miss Daisy."

Chuck was most proud of his 20-plus years of service as secretary/treasurer for the Barbers Union of Iowa, a member of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of St. Francis Church and as a supporter of Bishop Heelan Catholic High School.

He will be missed by his wife of 55 years, Sophie; his children, Mary Ellen and her husband, Bill Dalziel of Bothell, Wash., Richard Green and his wife, Judy of Eugene, Ore., and Nancy Alpay of Pacifica, Calif.; his grandchildren, Carmin Dalzeil, Kenan Alpay and Kerin Green; his sister, Mary Ann Schink and her husband, Herman of Anthon; and his brothers, Donald and his wife, Kitty of Buffalo, N.Y., Joe and his wife, Fern of Omaha and Ronald (Kenneth Swim) of Houston, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a brother Bert.

In lieu of flowers, memirials may be directed to the Carmelite Nuns or Queen of Peace, both in Sioux City.
