Howard Coover, 85, of Sioux City died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with his son, the Rev. Thomas F. Coover officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Coover was born June 9, 1917, in Holly Springs, Iowa, the son of Freeman and Edna Coover. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a supply truck driver during the bombings in London.

He married Frances George on March 3, 1951, in Sioux City. He was employed as a diesel mechanic for several trucking companies. He retired in 1988 from Condon Motors. Mrs. Coover died Nov. 23, 1998, in Sioux City.

He was, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and AmeriCan Legion Post 64. He was a transport driver for the Abu Bekr Shrine White Horse Mounted Patrol for appearances at the presidential inaugurations and the annual Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Thomas F. Coover of Dover, N.H.; a daughter, Mary Ann Gomes of Sioux City; a brother, Tom Coover of Savannah, Ga.; four sisters, June Folkers of Smithland, Iowa, Nina Martinsen of Newcastle, Neb., Joyce Swalley of Rapid City, S.D., and Janice Dahl of San Diego, Calif.; a sister-in-law Virginia Coover of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Allison, Lisa and Michael Coover; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary Lee Coover; and two brothers, True and Orlie Coover.

Pallbearers will be Allison, Coover, Lisa Coover, Michael Coover, Raymond Coover, Rick Coury and Carl Wirth.
