SIOUX CITY | Robert "Bob" Olkiewicz, a former production manager at the Sioux City Journal, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, in Phoenix, Ariz.

No arrangements have been announced.

A native of Chicago, Bob was a 1968 graduate of the Printing Institute of Illinois. Mr. Olkiewicz came to the Journal's production department in 1974 after working 14 years for the Pioneer Press in Wilmette, Ill., where he was a leader of a commercial printing plant.

At the Journal, he headed the production side of setting type and creating pages for printing in the offset mode. He successfully converted the Journal from what was called a hot metal operation of the past to the new offset system and the efficient combination of production departments. He went on to become the composing room superintendent and was responsible for maintaining the computer systems and day-to-day production of the newspaper.

During a major part of his tenure at the Journal, Bob played a very significant role in Goodfellow Charities, a Journal-sponsored fundraiser. A longtime Journal charity, Goodfellows raises funds to buy gifts for children at Christmas. Bob was the president of the organization and arranged for the buying and distributing of the toys during each Christmas season.

Bob is survived by a son and daughter, in Phoenix.
