SIOUX CITY -- Iola F. Salmen, 97, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 at a local hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary service at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Iola was born March 30, 1914 in Dallas, S.D., the daughter of Charles Walter and Katherine (Berg) Cue. On Nov. 9, 1935, she married Chester F. "Chet" Salmen in Fairfax, S.D. To the union 12 children were born. The couple farmed near Baker, Neb. before moving to Sergeant, Neb., where they owned and operated the Gamble Store. They moved to Sioux City in 1965. Iola worked as a cook at Marian Health Center for 16 years. Chet died Jan. 11, 1982 in Sioux City.

Iola was a member of VFW Post 1973 Auxiliary and served as its president for four years, secretary for 15 years and was a district guard. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Iola loved the farm, her big family and fishing. She loved to garden and grow flowers. She was well known for her canning and sharing them with family and friends. Iola enjoyed making poppy arrangements and won many first place awards at state level. She was a Boy Scout leader in Sergeant, Neb. and in Sioux City.

Survivors include 12 children and their spouses, Marilyn and Daniel Kirwan of Rosholt, S.D., Kenneth and Fern Salmen of Madison, Neb., Richard and Cathy Salmen of Creighton, Neb., Henry and Karen Salmen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Karen and Wally Deets of Norfolk, Neb., Charles and Marcella Salmen of Sioux City, James and Darlene Salmen of Sioux City, Patrick and Mary Salmen of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Linda and James Roethler of Sioux City, William and Robin Salmen of Niobrara, Neb., Donald of Lawton, Iowa, and Mary and Ron Clause of Sioux City; 40 grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren and 25 great-stepgrandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and eight great-great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters; one brother; two great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Gene Jensen.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Salmen, Jennifer Hunt, Brad Salmen, Tom Roethler, Tony Roethler, Chad Salmen, Amanda Salmen, Angela Salmen, Elizabeth Jacobson, Cindy Salmen and Nick Salmen.
