PIERSON, Iowa | Bernard A. Benson, 89, of Pierson passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Correctionville, Iowa, with the Rev. Lorene Glant officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, rural Correctionville, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Harrison F. Pedersen Post 291 of Pierson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa. Bernard Alfred Benson was born on July 2, 1923, in Soldier, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Annie (Tollufsen) Benson. He graduated from Pierson High School in 1942. Bernard enjoyed playing sports like basketball and baseball, participating in Golden Gloves boxing and skiing, especially, watching the sport. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946, stationed in Greenland. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the Pierson area, where he farmed.

Bernard was united in marriage to Ruby E. Meier on June 1, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cushing, Iowa. After their marriage, Bernard and Ruby lived and farmed east of Pierson, later moving south of Correctionville, and west of Anthon, Iowa. He had a particular way of raising cattle, which he enjoyed. Eventually, they moved to a farm east of Pierson, where they remained until their retirement. Ruby passed away on May 6, 2005.

Bernard was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his son, Rick (Barbara) Benson of Anthon, Iowa; son, Mark Benson of Maple Valley, Wash.; daughter, Ramona (Dean) Weber, of Danbury, Iowa; son, Brad (Charmaine) Benson of Garden City, Kan.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Struve; and two brothers, Donald (Anita) and Marvin (Norma) Benson.

Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Ruby; sister, Norma Clausen; and brother, Ernest Benson at the age of 13 years.
