SIOUX CITY -- Juanita M. Ferdig, 84, of Sioux City died of a broken heart Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, nine months to the day her husband, Jewell, died.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Juanita was born Aug. 31, 1927, in Maynard, Minn., the daughter of Elbert and Lucille (Kranz) Douglas. She came to Sioux City at the age of 5. Juanita attended school at Owego and Luton, Iowa.

She married the only man she ever loved, Jewell Ferdig on July 16, 1945 in Sioux City. Juanita worked at Armour Packing Plant for 14 years. After the plant closed, she went to work at Red Owl Bakery and Dura Pack, retiring in 1965.

She was a former member of St. Francis Catholic Church and most recently was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Teresa J. Kentner of Sioux City; a son, Vernon L. Ferdig of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Jacob and Julia Kentner, Marty, Steve, Shane and Nick Ferdig; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Haylee and Kriger Ferdig; a sister, Judith Mikeska of Kerville, Texas; and a brother, Rick Douglas of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jewell; granddaughter, Robyn Ferdig; sister, Janice McCall; and three brothers, Tobey, Harry and Douglas.
