SIOUX CITY -- Alvin L. Tramontina Sr. of Sioux City died peacefully at his residence on Dec. 16, 2011.

Alvin's six children gathered in Sioux City this past week to celebrate their dad's life. Private graveside services will take place at a later date.

Alvin was born on July 18, 1925, to Anthony and Clorinda (Bet) Tramontina. Alvin was born in Denver, Colo. and raised in Sioux City, where he resided until his retirement in the 1980s. In his retirement, he lived in Mesa, Ariz., Springfield, Mo., and Rio Rancho, N.M., where he met and married Catherine Marino. The couple returned to Sioux City in 2003.

Alvin grew up on Sioux City's west side and graduated from Central High School. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theatre until 1946 on the U.S.S. Platte A-024 as a radioman. In 1948, he married Patricia O'Connor and raised six children. Alvin owned and operated Desco Coatings of Iowa, Inc. and Sioux City Mosaic, Inc., until 1980. He had fond memories of all of the construction projects that he was involved in reaching from Sioux City throughout southeast part of South Dakota, the Northeast portion of Nebraska, and all of Northwest Iowa.

Over his lifetime, Alvin was active in several veterans' organizations, the Bishop Heelan Catholic High School Board, the Sioux City Boat Club, and 100 Dance Club. Alvin served as president of the Northwest Terrazzo Association and served on the board of the National Terrazzo and Mosaic organization. Alvin loved to dance and was a member of many organizations like the Moose Club, the Elks and the American Legions.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine; sister, Marie Aspelin of Overland Park, Kan.; his six children, Mike (Margi Weiss) of Des Moines, Mark (Peggy Jones) of Sioux City, Toney (Cathie Twohig) of Albuquerque, N.M., Linda Messenger (John) of Grayslake, Ill., Gina Weiland (Tom) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Al Tramontina, Jr. (Jody Anderson) of West Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
