SIOUX CITY -- Wayne V. Woody, 80, of Baldwin City, Kan., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Dengel and Son Mortuary in Ottawa, Kan. Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Baldwin City. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family at dengelmortuary@sbcglobal.net.

Wayne V. Woody was born June 24, 1931, in Salina, Kan., the son of Clayton and Viola (Hinchman) Woody. He grew up in Barnard, Kan., on the Woody Hereford Ranch. In 1948, Wayne graduated from Barnard High School, where he played baseball. He enrolled at University of Kansas on a baseball scholarship, was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and ROTC, and graduated with a degree in history. He served in the U.S. Navy from July 9, 1954, to July 4, 1956. He served in the Korean War as a chief supply officer, receiving the American Defense Service Medal and China Service Medal.

Wayne met Mary Ellen Landrum in Coronado, Calif. They married Feb. 11, 1956, in Hutchinson, Kan., and were blessed with 56 years of marriage.

Wayne was a chartered life underwriter for Equitable Life Assurance Society, where he worked for more than 30 years. He was an agency manager and an officer of the company. He and his family lived in Harrisburg, Pa., Peoria, Ill., Sioux City and Springfield, Ill., prior to retiring to Baldwin City in 1986, where he made his home until his death.

During the years, Wayne served in the Masons and Shriners.

Wayne's rural upbringing was reflected in almost all of his hobbies -- walleye fishing, chicken fighting and avid hunting. He also loved to golf. Wayne recently spent two weekends with his lifelong friend, George Murray, chasing coyotes across Kansas pastures.

He was a sports fan and loved his Kansas Jayhawks, Chicago Bears and his World Champion St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen of Baldwin City; his daughter, Cathy Creviston of Wellsville, Kan.; his three sons, Michael (Susan) Woody of Des Moines, Iowa, Richard (Mary) Woody of Overland Park, Kan., and David Woody (Erika Edgar) of Ottawa; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia Montgomery; and his son, Stephen.
