18 December 2011HORNICK, Iowa -- Phyllis Unkel, 94, of Whiting, Iowa, formerly of Hornick, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hornick United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catie Newman officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service at Onawa, Iowa.
Phyllis was born Oct. 6, 1917, at Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin and Anna Belle (Pilker) Ferdig. She graduated from Smithland High School.
Phyllis and Dean Unkel were united in marriage March 22, 1939, and were blessed with two children, Terry and Susan. They were lifetime farmers in rural Hornick.
She was a member of the Hornick United Methodist Church and an honorary member of the U.M.W. She enjoyed gardening and caring for her flowers.
Survivors include her husband, Dean Unkel of Whiting; a son and his wife, Terry and Laureen Unkel of Belleville, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Susan and Wallace Mundy of Sugar Grove, Ill.; two grandchildren, Michael (Ramie) Mundy of Aurora, Ill., and Megan (Bryan) Marconi of Joliet, Ill.; a great-grandson, Henry Mundy of Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Rosalie and Norma, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Wilmer, Boyd, Sybil, Louise and Ruby.
