SIOUX CITY -- Janavie C. Holmes, 98, of Sioux City passed away Dec. 13, 2011, at her residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Tess Panamarow officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Janavie, the daughter of Willie and Minnie (Perrine) Hurst, was born Dec. 27, 1912, in Gassaway, W.V. She attended school through the sixth grade before she quit to aid the farmhands in the field.

She married Alfred E. Holmes on May 17, 1946, in Sioux City. She was a homemaker but worked for Curtis Sash and Door for 10 years. She had several other jobs while the kids were in school.

She loved gardening and taking care of her rosebushes and flowers. She enjoyed listening to the radio, watching Western shows and canning.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria (Joe) Fazio of Sioux City and Phyllis Elaine Gilbert of Congress, Ariz.; a son, James C. Holmes of Columbia, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred; a brother; a sister; a daughter, Bernie; a grandson; and two great-grandsons.
