M. Miller “Nick” Nickolisen 1929-2013

M. Miller “Nick” Nickolisen, son of Marion and Ethel (Miller) Nickolisen, was born February 22, 1929 at Ticonic, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa at the age of 83.

Miller was raised in the Ticonic area and attended school there until the family moved to Smithland. He attended school in Smithland and was very active in athletics during high school. He graduated from Smithland High School in 1947 and then attended business school in Omaha.

On October 21, 1949, Miller was united in marriage to Doris Ilene Richardson in Smithland, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Kathie, Darwin, Karla, Tricia and Amy. The family made their home on a farm near Smithland and Miller worked as a road construction superintendent for Midwest Paving for many years until retiring in 1986. In addition, he also was a cattle farmer.

Miller enjoyed raising cattle, fishing, hunting, cutting wood, playing cards and most of all being a Super Hero to his grandchildren. His motto was, “You always gotta try hard”.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children: Kathie Menin of Sioux City, IA, Darwin (Brenda) Nickolisen of Alta, IA, Karla (Dave) Lange of Pleasant Hill, IA, Tricia (Doug) Durst of Shawnee, KS and Amy (Dennis) O’Neal of Whiting, IA; fourteen grandchildren: Stacie (Todd) Anderson, Stephanie (Bill) Vaul, Joshua (Amanda) Menin, Nathan and Kayla Nickolisen, Joel, Kristin and Kali Lange, Devin and Jackson Durst, and Jena, Michael, Paige and Andrew O’Neal; five great grandchildren; one sister, Nancy (Don) Butler of Lake Elmo, MN; longtime caregiver, Mary Fox of Smithland, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Miller was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Ethel Nickolisen; wife, Doris on December 10, 2001; one granddaughter, Rachael Lange; and two grandsons: Nicholas Lange and W. Robbie Johnson.
