SIOUX CITY | John "Jack" Francis Kinney, 91, of Sioux City passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Jack was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Omaha, to John Francis and Josephine (Kelley) Kinney. He received his education in Omaha at Cathedral Elementary School, Creighton Prep and Creighton University, where he earned his law degree in 1950.

He served in World War II as a fighter/pilot/captain in the 325th Fighter Group, Checkertail Clan U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, five Air Medals and three Battle Stars.

He married the love of his life, Virginia Ann Roach on June 9, 1945.

He was a member of the Nebraska/Iowa Bar Associations. He served as general counsel, vice president and chief operating officer of Iowa Public Service Co. in Sioux City.

Jack was a stalwart Notre Dame and Creighton Blue Jays fan.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia; 10 children, Michael (Rondi) Kinney, Sue (John) Kinney-Wieland, Mary (Robby) Clouse, John, Jeanne (Ned) Buser, Molly (Roger) Campbell, Matt (LeAnn) Kinney, Teresa (Jim Miller) Kinney, Steve (Barb) Kinney and Eileen (Tom McGrath) Kinney; sister, Alice Marie (Daniel) Kinney-Grady; 28 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his dearest aunt, Catherine Kelley; and his grandson, Christopher Wieland.
