George A. Carey, 83, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in Zapata, Texas, while visiting his long time friend, Ron Vaughn.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, at Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Revs. Lee Williamson and Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Carey was born Jan.16,1920,in Dunblane, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of George and Clara (Amerud) Carey. He came to Sioux City as a child and had lived ever since. He graduated from Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star Medal for his service at Anzio Beach.

He married Gertrude Bowen on June 14,1941, in Elk Point, S.D. She died in January 1982. He married Virginia Smith on July 24, 1982, in Sioux City.

He worked for various car dealerships in Sioux City, then worked for IPS, now Mid American Energy, for many years and retired from there.He was a member of the Siouxland Horseless Carriage Club, the Masonic Lodge, High Twelve Club and the Abu Bela Shrine Temple. He also was a member of the American Legion Monahan Post 64 and Whitfield United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Shirley Watson of Sioux City; a son and his wife,; Gary and Joyce Carey of Waterford, Mich.; a step¬daughter and her husband, Barb and Joe Juarez of Hinton, Iowa; two stepsons and their wives, Steve and Georgia Voss of Sioux City and Lee and Carol Voss of Spirit Lake, Iowa; two brothers, Gene Carey of Sacramento, Calif., and Henry Carey of Donners Grove, Ill.; four grandchildren, Heather, Hillary, Lee and George; two step-granddaughters, Jodi and Jackie; and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Frances Hoffman; and a son-in-law, Norman Watson.

Pallbearers will be Hillary Brown, Todd Blair, Cory Brown, Heather Blair and George and Lee Carey.
