SIOUX CITY -- Stanton A. "Stan" Coleman, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, following complications of hip surgery.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Congregation Beth Shalom, with Rabbi Guy Greene officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Sinai Cemetery, with military graveside rites. The family will be present one hour prior to the service Sunday at the synagogue. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Stan was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Sioux City, the youngest son of Samuel Louis and Ethel Miller Cohen. He graduated from Central High School with the class of 1942. He served in combat during World War II with the U.S. Army Americal Division in the South Pacific Theater and was decorated with the Purple Heart.

Stan attended Iowa State University and graduated from Morningside College. In 1948, Stan joined his father at People's Department Store. Stan was the sole owner from 1962 to 1992, when the business closed upon his retirement.

Stan married the love of his life, Verna E. Peterson, on June 5, 1955. She died on Jan. 18, 1997 in Sioux City.

Stan was a longtime member of the Sioux City Board of Adjustment and supported the first efforts of urban renewal of the Fourth Street area in the 1970s. He was an active member of Mount Sinai Temple, later Congregation Beth Shalom and supported Temple B'nai Jeshurun in Des Moines in his later years. Stan was a proud member of the VFW, DAV and NRA. He enjoyed traveling, bird watching and following current events.

Survivors include two daughters, Becky Coleman-Bunkers (Doug Bunkers) of Newton, Iowa, and Sara Coleman of Norwalk, Iowa; grandchildren, Sam and Leah Bunkers; and very special friends, Bonnie Jones and Jim Titus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and brother, Robert.

Pallbearers will be Robert Coleman of Columbus, Ohio, Bruce Kalin of Sioux City, Doug Peterson of Bettendorf, Iowa, Samuel Bunkers of Iowa City, Iowa, Doug Bunkers of Newton, and Mark Rawlings of Sioux City.

Memorials may be made in his name to Siouxland Palliative Care, Meals of the Heartland in Des Moines, or Mercy Hospice in Des Moines.
