SIOUX CITY -- Richard C. Gordon, 85, of Sioux City died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Evangelical Free Church, 401 Ninth St., in Sioux City, with the Rev. J. Michael Dixon (his son-in-law) and the Rev. Kevin Miller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Richard Gordon was born June 20, 1926, in Rapid City, S.D. He moved to Sioux City, where he graduated from Central High School and Sioux City Barber College. Richard joined the U.S. Army and served in Japan during World War II.

Dick met Ruby Johnson at a Christian youth meeting at First Evangelical Free Church. He married Ruby in 1949. They enjoyed a loving marriage for 52 years.

Richard was a veteran of World War II, barbered for 48 years, was a Boy Scout master, a dog groomer, and held numerous positions in church leadership over the years at First Evangelical Free Church. As a family, they enjoyed sports such as swimming, boating, water skiing, snowmobiling and camping. To Richard, family was number one next to God. In retirement, he and Ruby enjoyed traveling the United States in their motor home.

Richard is survived by five children, Richard L. (Marjean) Gordon of Sioux City, Beth (Mike) Dixon of Hickory Hills, Ill., Delores "Dee" (Mike) Ritter of Hastings, Minn., Ed (Sue) Gordon of West Des Moines, and Trudy Gordon of Sioux City. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Chuck Gordon, Wendy (Randy) Kies, Chris (Katie) Gordon, Laura (Taylor) Strickling, Ruthann (Brad) Archer, Rebekah Dixon, Matthew Ritter, Andy Ritter, Jennifer (Adam) George, Karen Gordon, and Lisa (Nic) McVicker; great-grandchildren, Spencer George, Elliott George, Chase Lies, Ryne Kies, Ruby Archer, and Joanna Gordon; and his sister, Lauretta Grove of Sioux City. His companion and special friend, Donna Grell, will dearly miss him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Gordon; his parents, Edwin and Henrietta Gordon; his brothers, Don Gordon and Jack Gordon; and a great-grandchild, Ty Richard Kies
