Richard R. Smith, 83, of Sioux City died Monday, May 21, 2001 at a Sioux City retirement home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the Rev. Mary Christopher officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Algiers, Algeria, the son of Edward Sr, and Lillian (Ricketts) Smith. He graduated from Central High School. He married Vera Margaret Currie on Aug. 26, 1946, in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. He came to the United States with his parents in 1921 and to Sioux City in 1926. He worked for Knapp and Spencer for 36 years before retiring in 1980. He was retired from the Teamsters.

He served in the U.S. Army during Wdrld War II with the 34th Division in Ireland, England and North Africa. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and was a Acolyte for the church. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans 54 and the American Legion Monahan Post 64.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard Currie Smith and his wife, Magie Stedman Smith of Minneapolis, and Sean of Sioux City; a daughter, Ruth Smith Keairns and her husband, Harry of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Scott, Wendi and Ryan Smith, Brian and Jane Keairns and Brenda Caruso; three great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Tom Currie and a sister-in-law, Margaret Robinson, both of Northern Ireland; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Smith.

Memorials may be directed to St. Thomas Episcopal Church and the Alzheimers Association.
