Jack was born June 26, 1938, in Emerson, Neb., to James and Helen (Pipal) Pope. His mother died when Jack was 2 years old. While his father was in the Army overseas, he lived with relatives and neighbors. Jack attended country school and Emerson Public School. He enjoyed telling his grandkids he went through school in one day -- in the front door and out the back.

Jack helped his father on the farm until age 15 when he began working the wheat harvest from Kansas through North Dakota into Canada. This is when he learned to drive a truck, which became his life's passion. At age 18, he went to California and worked in the logging business for several years before moving to Kiron, Iowa. There he farmed, and owned and operated a corn sheller. He also worked at Farmland Foods, first in the smokehouse, then driving truck. Jack tried retirement but missed the trucking business. He went to work for Mid-Continent in Denison, Iowa.

Jack married Sharon Carter on Jan. 4, 1986, in Ute. They enjoyed camping and fishing in various states.

He was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church.

Jack was an outdoorsman. He hunted elk, deer, antelope, wild pigs and game birds. His buddies looked forward to hunting with "Old Father Time." He made many friends across the United States who remember him for his honesty and fairness.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Kathy Pope (friend Don Diersen) of Kiron, and Kristy (Jim) Munden of Grand Island, Neb.; two stepsons, Brian Carter of Dunlap, Iowa, and Randy (Amelia) Carter of Ridgeland, S.C.; three stepdaughters, Lori Schroeder of Anthon, Iowa, Sheryl (Brett) Schelm of Climbing Hill, Iowa, and Noel (Darren) Dubsky of Omaha; seven grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 11 great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ralph and Ruth Teut; two sons, Kevin and Keith; and a son-in-law, Lee Schroeder.

Condolences may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 252, Sloan, IA 51055.
