John H. Hubbard, 86, of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Bickford Cottage in Sioux City.

Abiding by his wishes, he will be cremated. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Darrin Vick officiating. Military honors will be conducted by U.S. Army Reserves. Burial of the cremains will be in Hillside Cemetery in Doon, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Online condolences may be posted at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

John was born March 25, 1926, in Eastland, Texas, to William M. and Modie L. (Hodges) Hubbard. He graduated from high school in Albuquerque, N.M. After graduation, John joined the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. When he was honorably discharged, he continued to serve his country in the Army National Guard until 1957.

He married Helene Ross on June 1, 1946, in Albuquerque. She died Sept. 10, 1999, in Sioux City.

In 1957, John and his family moved to Sioux City, where he started working in the grocery business. After working for several grocery chains, John opened his own grocery store, Hubbard IGA, and operated it until 1986. John took pride in working. The hardest thing for him to do was retire in 2011 from Hy-Vee. Besides taking pride in his work, John and his wife owned and operated Danceland for many years in Sioux City, bringing joy to many people. John and Helene loved taking their grandchildren on vacations.

Survivors include his son Mark (Pat) Hubbard of Sioux City; a granddaughter Kim (Jarrod) Friloux of Luling, La.; a grandson, Andrew Hubbard of Omaha; and a great-grandson, Kevin Friloux.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
