Rex D. Barcus, 68, of Sioux City died Thursday Aug. 3, 2000, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery, Lawton, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Barcus was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Wewela, S.D., the son of Elmer James and Lila Alpha (Kyler) Barcus. He attended grade school in Wewela and high school in Colome, S.D.

He married Leona Clothilde DeSmet June 3, 1950, in Colome. He was employed with Fullerton Lumber Yard for 27 years. The couple lived in Corsica and Kimball, S.D., Lohrville and Anthon, Iowa, where he retired from the lumberyard. They then moved to Tyndall, S.D., where he owned and operated a hardware store. They moved to Sioux City in 1986 where he retired from First Federal Bank.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He also was a Boy Scout leader, emergency medical technician, vorunteer fireman and baseball coach. He enjoyed the outdoors, carpentry and gardening.

Survivors include his wife: two sons, Jerry and his wife, Theresa of Sioux City, and John Barcus and his companion, Dr. William Crone of Atlanta, Ga.; four daughters, Kay and her husband, Richard Sands of Lawton, Iowa, Yvette and her husband, Jerry Stratton of Moville, Iowa, Lori and her husband, Rick Diamond of Omaha. and Tracy Barcus of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Gene and Dorothy of Creston. Neb.: a sister and her husband, Merna and Mark Huber of Morrill, Neb.; a special friend, Scott Harkness of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Paul and Perley Barcus.

Pallbearers will be Jarret Sands, T.J., Kristopher and Casey Stratton, Anthony and Joe Diamond and Adam and Matthew Barcus.
