Verdene L. Hefner 1923-1994

CUSHING, Iowa — Verdene L. Hefner, 71, of Cushing died Friday, Oct. 21, 1994, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing with pastor Douglas Opp officiating. Burial will be in the Cushing Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barker Funeral Home in Holstein, Iowa.

Mr. Hefner was born June 16, 1923, in Nora Springs, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Alvena (Zoch) Hefner. He was baptized July 22, 1923, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Nora Springs. He moved with his family to a farm northwest of Holstein in 1924. He attended country school near Holstein, and then Cushing Consolidated School. He moved to Cushing with his family in 1936. He was confirmed April 5, 1936, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. He married Rachel Powell May 14, 1944, in Cherokee, Iowa. They had two daughters. Mrs. Hefner died Feb. 16, 1946. He married Maxine Conaway Feb. 19,1953, in Omaha, Neb. They had three sons.

Mr. Hefner drove truck for Pat McGuire for several years. He and Maxine owned and operated a live stock and grain trucking business for many years in the Cushing area. He was custodian for Eastwood Community Schools and drove a school bus. He also drove truck for Kay Dee feed of Sioux City.

Mr. Hefner was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He was a former member of the Cushing City Council and the Cushing Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine; two daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Jerry Henningfeld, and Darnelle and Mike Ellsworth, all of Sioux City; three sons, Randy and his wife Connie of Adel, Iowa, Rod of Sergeant Bluff, and Rita and his wife Linda of Cushing; 12 grandchildren, Brian, Paul, Todd and Sheila Henningfeld, Trudy Perez, Holly and Troy Ellsworth, Mark, Clint, Jaremey, Jacquie and Joshua Hefner; three great-grandchildren, Jace and Jordan Henningfeld and Rachael Perez; a sister and her husband, LaVonne and Virgil Volkert of Cushing; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Loren and sister-in-law, Doris Hefner.
