SIOUX CITY -- Winifred M. Sands, 84, of Sioux City passed away Monday, March 26, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tanya Sherrill officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Winifred was born on Sept. 4, 1927, in Anthon, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mildred (Everetts) Miller. She graduated from the Anthon High School and then from the Teacher's College at Wayne State. She taught in Anthon for several years.

Winifred was married to Darrell Sands. They later divorced, but became best of friends throughout the later years of her life. After leaving the education field, Winifred worked at Barney-Barrens in Sioux City, then took time being a homemaker to raise her family. She then worked for Zenith for several years, and retired during the mid 1980s from IBP.

She loved the outdoors, boating, fishing and horseback riding. She had great enjoyment from planting and raising flowers. Winifred loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Winifred was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church.

Winifred is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Jerrold) French, Sandy Sands and Sheila (Jeff) Wheeler; her sons, Steven Sands, Douglas (Patty) Sands, Brian Sands, Gregory (Kim) Sands and Jeffrey (Becky) Sands; her sisters, Irene Carrol and Ella Derochie; her brother, Harley Miller; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and the family's very special friend, Kim Barkley.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Katherine Frost, Ruby Lill and Dorothy Johnson; and her brothers, Ralph Miller and Everett Miller.
