SIOUX CITY | Walter C. Kelly, 88, of Cottonwood, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012.

A celebration of life service will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Clarkdale, Ariz. Arrangements are under the direction of Wescott Funeral Home in Cottonwood. An online guestbook is available to sign at www.westcottfuneralhome.com.

Walter was born on Sept. 6, 1924, to John and Willetta Kelly in Sioux City. He had a brother and a sister. In 1943, Walt graduated from East High School in Sioux City and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army 8th Armored Division from 1943 until he was wounded in Germany in February 1945. Walt earned a Bronze Star and was awarded a Purple Heart and was very proud of his service to his country.

In October 1945, Walt moved to Phoenix, Ariz. In December 1945, he married the love of his life, Faye E. Wingert. Mr. Kelly spent 32 years with the U.S. Postal Service and retired as the manager of mail classification in January 1980. In September 1991, he and Faye moved to Cottonwood, where known to many in the area.

While in the Phoenix area, Walter was a member of the Scottsdale 43 Masons, Order of Eastern Star and was an active member of El Zaribah Shrine clown unit. Walter was also a life member of the Elks Jerome Lodge 14 and a life member of the El Zaribah Shrine. Walt was a great jokester and his personality was larger than life itself. His life with Faye was a true love story, knowing each other since they were 15 years old and being married for 66 years; they were forever soul mates. Walter and Faye were devout members of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Clarkdale.
