Gale R. Custer, 73, of Sioux City died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Arlington Cemetery at Moville, Iowa. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Custer was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of Harry and Josephine (Montange) Custer.

He farmed the family farm near Moville.

Mr. Custer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and returned to Sioux City after his discharge. He married Ann "Opal" Smith on Nov. 2, 1946, in Sioux City.

He was employed by North-western Railroad and the Iowa State Highway Department. He was also employed as a machinist with Sioux Tools for 37 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the American Legion Monahan Post 64.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Raymond and Patricia of Des Moines, Donnin and Elizabeth of Holly Springs, Iowa, and Linden and Karen of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Nancy Watson of Dakota City; a sister and her hus¬band, Phillis and Warren Flewelling of rural Sioux City; eight grandchildren, William, Lacey and Amber Watson, Ashley and Cody Custer, Joseph and Michelle Greve and Jeromy Angerman; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Custer; and two sisters, Betty Jane Custer and Betty Jean Henderson.
