Vernon R. Sullivan, 65, of Rutland, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Sept. 5, 2012, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be left at masonlindhart@gmail.com.

Vernon Ray Sullivan, the son of Lloyd and Lois (Haines) Sullivan, was born May 30, 1947, in Remsen, Iowa. At the age of 5, he moved to the Boys and Girls Home in Sioux City, where he lived until he graduated in 1947 from Central High School. Following his graduation, Vern enlisted into the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War as a tunnel rat.

Following his honorable discharge, Vern married Scherry Geigle and the couple made their home in Sioux City. He was employed in various packing plants. The couple later owned and operated, Scherry’s Truck Stop in North Sioux City. The marriage dissolved in 1990. Vern later moved to Clarion, Iowa, and then to Webster City, Iowa, where he retired from Electrolux.

Vern loved to attend dances and would eventually meet his wife, Linda Hjelmeland, at the VFW. They were united in marriage in 1995 and have continued to share a love for one another, as well as, their numerous dogs they called their children. Vern and Linda made their home in Rutland, where Vern owned and operated Sully’s Bait and Tackle Shop.

Vern enjoyed being outdoors fishing and camping. He enjoyed teasing people, creating unique treasures from wood, scratch tickets and cigarettes. He will especially be missed by his little buddy, Pee Wee.

Vern is survived by his wife, Linda of Rutland; his children, Lisa (Troy "T.J.") Hansel of Sioux City, Kary (Doug) Dean of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Vernon (fiancee, Tynna Williamsen) Sullivan Jr. of Sioux City; grandchildren, Codi Graves, Taylor Graves, Tanner Hansel, Trevor Caldwell, Devon Caldwell, and Samuel Dean; great-grandson, Channing Heck; and sisters, Sandra Oatman, Mary Keller, and Joyce Winterboar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Bob and Jim Sullivan.
