Elvin L. "Chris" Jansen, 79, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Elvin was born March 14, 1932, in Oto, Iowa, the son of Martin and Ann (Florke) Jansen. He grew up in Oto and graduated from Oto High School, where he played basketball. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He married Patricia Lacey on June 16, 1956, in Royal, Iowa. She died Feb. 2, 2007, in Sioux City.

Elvin worked for Armour and Co. at several locations and returned to Sioux City, where he served as business agent for Local 1142 for several years before he retired. After retirement in the early 1980s, he started Jansen Lawn Service.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the VFW.

Elvin enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.

Survivors include his children, Rory (Mary) Jansen of Sioux City, Ronald (Ann) Jansen of Sheldon, Iowa, Roger (Roxanne) Jansen of Lawton, Iowa, and Renee (Richard) Niles of Sioux City; a brother, Pete (Vi) Jansen of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Howard (Marilyn) Lacey of Spencer, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Jansen of Sioux City, and Anita (Rudy) Novak of Omaha, Neb.; 12 grandchildren, Jill, Jeffrey, Josh, Emily, Christopher, Allison, Taylor and Austin Jansen, Brooke (Jeff) Happe and Bridgette, Kelsey and Connor Niles; and a great-grandson, Hayden Happe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; and several brothers and sisters, including most recently his brother, Ralph Jansen.

Pallbearers will be Lenny Robinson, Butch Gordon, Dennis Kvidera, Pete Jansen, Fred Pickering, Ryan Uhl, Paul Niles and Jim Brown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bishop Heelan Catholic School in Sioux City.
